I stared into the mirror, trying to figure out where my life went wrong. Everything was perfect when I was eighteen years old. My high school sweetheart was perfect. We should have been the couple that went to college together, got married, and started a family. If I had followed that path, I would already be a mother. Hell, I would probably have kids in school by now. I put my head in my hands.

Things were so damn complicated. Why had I been so stubborn that I wouldn’t listen to anything my friends or family tried to tell me? I needed to know what Ryker knew about the past. I thought I knew, but now I wasn’t so sure. If we tried to make this work there would be so many things we would have to overcome. When he came to New York, why didn’t he make me talk to him? Everything would be so different now. I didn’t even know if I wanted to be with Ryker now. Fuck, for that matter did he want to be with me? All I knew was that we had a week long arrangement that might or might not happen now.

My bag was packed and sitting by the door. As soon as Ryker came back in we could leave, but it had been over forty-five minutes since he had helped escort his mom out of the church. Maybe he’d changed his mind about coming back. I wouldn’t blame him. Everything that was going through my head had to be going through his too.

I stood up slowly, ignoring the hot tears that insisted on trailing down my cheeks. Within seconds I had on my coat and scarf. The small bag I packed only had makeup and a change of clothes that I had worn to the church. Luckily the back hallway was clear and I was able to slip out without anyone seeing me. Cold, bitter wind whipped up the alley as I made my way out to the street. Snowflakes were starting to fall, making it a magical winter wonderland outside. I couldn’t remember a time that it had actually snowed on Christmas here. Despite the shit show my life was becoming, I tilted my face up to the sky and let the cold flakes fall on my face.

“You’re beautiful.”

Ryker was staring at me with his hands crossed over his massive chest.

“You’re late.”

He took my bag and we fell into step as we walked. “Sorry it took me so long. I was on the phone with my father. I was trying to explain why I wouldn’t be home for Christmas dinner even though I promised him I would come last week.”

“I bet that was a fun conversation.”

“Oh yeah, all the way down to the ‘what the fuck did she say’. He had no clue what she’s been up to all these years and he’s pissed. Let’s just say it won’t be a very merry Christmas tomorrow.”

“So what are you going to do for Christmas dinner?”

He shrugged.
